PACHS offers Diabetes Awareness Program for Women

WomenPalo Alto County Health System is offering a diabetes awareness program to women.  This class will focus on education and support to improve health and avoid the complications of diabetes.  The program is open to all women, not just those with diabetes, and is offered free of charge.  Participants are encouraged to sign-up with a support partner.  Free babysitting is available for each session as well.

According to the American Heart Association, over twenty million Americans have diabetes, yet 30 % of them are unaware they have the disease.  Diabetes can lead to serious health complications.  Changing unhealthy habits can help to prevent diabetes complications and in some cases even prevent diabetes. 

Diabetes EducationWomen who join this new program will be required to attend the first two educational sessions. 

  • The first session will introduce the program and teach participants motivational interviewing and relaxation techniques. 
  • The second session will include pre-diabetes education. 

After the second session, monthly sessions will be offered on various health topics such as

  • exercise,
  • cooking light,
  • aromatherapy,
  • stress reduction. 

woman and girlCoaching sessions to help identify barriers to making healthy changes and making action plans to deal with barriers will also be included.
