The FGH Foundation is one of several nonprofit organizations which have joined together to form a statewide collaboration called LEAVE A LEGACY Iowa.
What is LEAVE A LEGACY? LAL is a nation-wide community-based education campaign to encourage people from all walks of life to remember charitable nonprofit organizations in their estate plans. It does not promote one specific charity, but seeks to benefit all nonprofit organizations.
What does it mean to leave a legacy? Leaving a legacy is a means of transferring your values to the next generation. By making a gift in your will, you can shape the future of an organization in a meaningful way.
Why is it important to plan my estate? If you don't stipulate your desires in a legal way, upon your death a significant portion of your estate could be reduced by taxes rather than directed to loved ones and/or the charitable organizations of your choosing.
I'm not wealthy. Can I still make a gift? If you have possessions, you have an estate. Deciding in advance how you plan to distribute your assets at your death is known as estate planning. You might be surprised to learn how even a modest gift from your estate can truly benefit the cause or causes of importance to you.
What's the best way to make a gift to charitable organizations? There are many ways to leave a legacy. You can give a fixed sum of money, specify certain property, or give a percentage of your estate. You can make a gift in your will or name a charity as the beneficiary of life insurance, retirement plans, CDs, and/or annuities.
Do I need to inform the nonprofit organization that I've made a gift in my will? You are not required to disclose your specific estate plans to anyone. Many organizations, however, like to recognize your gift during your lifetime. In addition, your generosity can serve as an inspiration to others.
If I decide to leave a legacy, what is the first step? Start with a trusted professional like your lawyer, financial planner, or insurance agent, who can help you fulfill your intentions. This will most likely involve preparing or updating your will.
