Respiratory Protection Program

The revised respiratory standard mandated by OSHA became effective April 8, 1998 and the enforcement date was October 5, 1998. This replaces the standard that OSHA adopted in 1971.

This new standard is intended to enhance worker protection and promote effective respirator use.

The new standard also makes it easier for companies to comply with regulations.

Requirements of a Respiratory Protection Program:

  • Written program needs to be implemented
  • Program will be updated as necessary
  • A qualified program administrator needs to be appointed
  • A medical evaluation for all employees required to wear respirators
  • Fit testing annually for employees wearing tight fitting respirators
  • Procedures for proper use, cleaning, storing and inspecting

PACHS Business Health Services can provide a Respiratory Program that provides:

  • Medical evaluations of all employees required to wear respiratory protection
  • Pulmonary Function Testing (if necessary)
  • Fit Testing for tight fitting respirators
  • Assistance with program development
  • Employee training for proper use, cleaning, and storing
