Peek-A-Boo Imaging Services at Palo Alto County Hospital

Peek-a-Boo Imaging Service

Waiting for the arrival of your new baby is a time of excitement and wonder.  Palo Alto County Hospital’s Peek-a-Boo Obstetrical Imaging offers a wonderful opportunity for you and your loved ones to see and bond with your baby before he or she is born.

Using state-of-the-art ultrasound imaging equipment, you and your family will watch your baby on a large LCD flat panel in our ultrasound suite.  Peek-a-Boo ultrasound sessions are performed by the same sonographer(s) that perform all of our diagnostic ultrasound examinations.

Can I make this ultrasound appointment on my own, or does it need to be ordered by my physician?

The purpose of this ultrasound session is to allow you and your loved ones to see and bond with your baby.  This is not a medical diagnostic ultrasound.  Therefore, you are welcome to schedule the appointment on your own.

However, all clients must be under the active care of a physician or midwife and the provider must be aware of your appointment.

How far in advance should I make my Peek-a-Boo ultrasound appointment?

We generally have availability within a couple of weeks notice.  The appointment may be scheduled in person or by calling our department.  Please be sure to specify that you are requesting an appointment for Peek-a-Boo ultrasound.

When is the best time to come in for my Peek-a-Boo imaging appointment?

Babies look and image differently at various stages of pregnancy.  The best time for  visualization of your baby’s facial features is between 26 and 32 weeks.  During this time of pregnancy, your baby has a nice amount of fat and development, which helps to define the face and other features.

Does this take place of the ultrasound exam(s) ordered by my provider?

ABSOLUTLEY NOT!  Women seeking an elective, non-diagnostic ultrasound must already be receiving treatment with a healthcare provider for prenatal care.  Please note, at no time is this exam to be used in place of a complete diagnostic ultrasound.

How long does the ultrasound take?

Your appointment is scheduled for 45 minutes.  Upon arrival, you will need to fill out two forms.  The actual imaging session will take approximately 30 minutes.

Can I bring family and friends to my ultrasound session?

Yes!  We invite you to bring your loved ones with you to this ultrasound experience.  We kindly ask that no food or drinks be brought into the ultrasound suite.

Do I need a full bladder?

No, you do not need a full bladder for this ultrasound session.  While we always encourage you to drink water and stay well hydrated, a full bladder is not required for this non-medical ultrasound

How much does the Peek-a-Boo imaging session cost?

The session cost is $50.00.

Payment in full is required in advance, by cash, debit, or credit card.

Will this ultrasound be covered by my insurance?

No, this is an elective service that is not covered by insurance.  Your insurance will not be billed.

What if  images are unable to be obtained?

We cannot guarantee that your pictures will be similar to those you might have seen elsewhere or even from our imaging service.  Every baby and mother images differently, depending on gestational age, baby’s position, amount of amniotic fluid, and mother’s condition.

However, if the sonographer determines that the images cannot be obtained in the initial session, one limited follow-up session may be scheduled at no additional fee.
